We fell in love with the KOA campground in Spearfish South Dakota on our recent visit this past May. Spearfish, which is located at the top of the Black Hills, is a perfect home base for so many great outdoor adventures. There are 3 campgrounds to choose from in Spearfish and while I did enjoy the city campground, the KOA is better for those travelers who enjoy have luxury amenities such as hot showers, laundry facilities, a camp store, swimming pool, and long term stays.
When it comes time to plan your trip to the Black Hills of Spearfish, here are 8 things I thought made KOA spearfish a great choice for our family. Click here to reserve your stay at the Spearfish KOA campground.

1 | Clean, Hot Showers
Let’s keep things real. We are dirtbags at heart, which means we live for days on the crag or off forest service roads, but when we need to rest and recover, there’s nothing as wonderful as a hot shower. I’m not exaggerating when I say the this was the best campground shower I’ve had in 5 years on the road.

The showers are in large private rooms. When my kids were younger I would’ve appreciated the fact that there was enough room to bathe the kids at the same time. It’s unlimited free hot water too! Yep, no button to push and no quarters!
The remodeled bathrooms and laundry room at the KOA campground in Spearfish are also very nice, clean, and spacious.

2 | Large Grassy Sites

I’m a huge fan of grassy campsites. The property is beautiful with grassy areas that butt right up to your rig. There are a ton of places for the kids to run around plus there is a swimming pool and a playground. There’s also a lot of room in between campsites.
3 | Premium Sites

I thought one of the coolest features of this campground was that some of the sites come with your very own full sized bbq on your own concrete slab along with a fire pit and picnic table. Many of these premium sites fit very large RVs too!
4 | Patio, Playground, + Pool Areas
There’s a nice deck to sit and relax on right outside the main lobby. This was a great place for me to sit and get work done as the WiFi signal was a little better, although not great, by the main building than in my site.
Also, they have all you can eat ice cream cream social for only $3 every night from 6-7 pm.

5 | Great Location
Another thing I live for is being able to walk to a brewery from my campground. One of the best breweries in Spearfosh, Crow Peak Brewery, is a 5 minute walk. In the same parking lot as the brewery is the Bees Knees, a natural food store that sells grass-fed beef from the owner’s ranch, the most delicious homemade long ferment sourdough bread I’ve ever tasted, and every other imaginable natural food you can think of. There’s also a Mexican restaurant next to the campsite that I’ll want to try on my next visit.
It’s a 10 minute drive to get to downtown or you can walk or ride the nature trail all the way to downtown.

6 | Delux Cabins

If you are traveling to Spearfish and don’t want to stay in a tent or RV, you should check out their deluxe cabins. They are basically 2 bedroom condos that sleep up to 6 people, have a full kitchen complete with a dishwasher, living room with a big-screen TV, and a nice patio area with fire pit.
7 | Spearfish Town Is Awesome
Spearfish might be our new favorite town. There is so much to do here especially if you love the outdoors. The best part to me is how kind and happy everyone is and that includes the wonderful folks running the campground.

If you got your license plates in Deadwood, could you not also get your drivers licenses there instead of staying in Spearfish and then driving to Deadwood?

I'm not sure if there is a driver's license office in Deadwood
