Sacral Chakra Healing: 10 Ways to Balance Svadhisthana

The sacral chakra, or Svadhisthana, is the place where self meets world. By healing the sacral chakra, you have the power to create beautiful things and value yourself as a fully worthy human being. A balanced Svadhisthana allows us to express our sense of self. It takes the sense of identity and oneness that we discover in the root chakra and helps us share those gifts vulnerably and powerfully with the world.

In this blog, we’re sharing info all about what the sacral chakra rules, the common problems it causes in our lives, and how to heal the second energy hub.

If you don’t already know what the chakras are, click here and check out our Beginners Guide to Chakras first before diving into this sacral chakra healing blog.

In sharing all the information we do in our group coaching and on how the chakras affect our lives, it became clear to me that there was 1 particular chakra that the majority of people seem to struggle with: The sacral chakra.

Don’t get me wrong, all of us have our own unique combination of strengths and weaknesses, but I think most of us to struggle to find balance in our sacral chakra. This is why we decided to write an entire blog on sacral chakra before any of the other chakras.

Read on to find out why a Sacral chakra imbalance is probably affecting your life and what you can do to fix it.

What the sacral chakra influences

The Sacral Chakra, also known as Svadhisthana is the second chakra. It is the ruler of creativity, one-on-one connections, intimacy, joy, pleasure, and most overall, self worth.

Located just couple inches above our security-conscious Root Chakra, the Sacral Chakra is where you literally bring your unique sense of self, identity, and thinking into the dynamic, physical space of the world.

This act of bringing our individuality into the world is what makes Svadhistahan the ruler of creativity.

But creativity isn’t just about hobbies. Svadhisthana is about overall creativity in our life, movements, actions, and relationships. It’s how we live a playful existence and it’s the source of our personal power.

A healthy sacral chakra gives us the green light to live out our greater purpose and let go of shame and self doubt.

The Sacral Chakra also represents emotional vulnerability and one-on-one connection with others. When open, this chakra also allows us to show our true selves, pursue our dreams, and take risks with resilience to failure.

Benefits of Healing the Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra may be the most common blockage but healing this chakra is one of the most empowering feelings there is. Just like the rest of our chakras, imbalance can look like 2 different things: overactive and underactive. In order to tap into the power of the Sacral Chakra, the aim is to find balance.

The key aspects of balance in the Sacral Chakra are respected by these 3 things

When you heal the Svadhisthana, you’ll feel:

  • An enormous sense of inspiration
  • Confidence in expressing your true self
  • Able to pursue your heart’s desires
  • Deeper, more fulfilling connection in your relationships
  • More present & able to engage fully in the world around you

When you stop chasing pleasure and denying pain, you’ll feel a healthy balance of being engaged in the present. You’ll learn how to take pleasure in what you have instead of chasing instant gratification. Instead of fearing discomfort, you’ll be able to engage with it until it passes.

When energy is flowing through this chakra, we allow others to see our vulnerabilities and allow ourselves to take risks, with resilience to failure.

Our sacral chakra gives us the green light to live out our greater purpose and let go of the control dramas of our past.

In our non-intimate relationships, it allows us to show our true selves, pursue our dreams, and give to others without attachment to results.

When this chakra has been well developed, we can differentiate ourself from the tribe that raised us. We accept and embrace our true self and listen to our individuality to live out our dreams.

When Sacral Chakra is Blocked

So how do you know if you have a blocked sacral chakra? The Sacral Chakra rules some pretty complex feelings and concepts and it may be hard to identify what balance feels like here if you’ve never experienced it.

Cause and effect of Sacral Chakra blockages

All chakras can manifest their blockages in physical, mental, or emotional expressions. Here are the most common examples of what blockages feel like for most of us struggling here.

Low Self Worth

The sacral chakra can become blocked when we live in fear of what others think of us or what we think of ourselves.

An example of low self worth is when we replay shameful memories or failures in our minds on repeat. Holding onto a negative emotion like shame makes us unable to step into our full power, creativity, and confidence.

Another example is when we can’t handle criticism or differing opinions. To overcome this lack of self worth, we need to learn to fully love and value ourselves and all aspects of our being and not seek it from the external world.

Lack of Fulfillment

Svadhisthana represents experiencing joy and pleasure. In balance, we experience this feeling through a fulfilling life path. In fact, in balance, we even learn to find pleasure in pain because we are so fulfilled by the challenges on our path. When we’re not living a fulfilling life, we seek to be distracted by other forms of satisfaction and gratification.

Inability to Create Intimate Relationships

When the sacral chakra is blocked, you may find yourself unable to tap into your personal power which not only affects creativity but also your ability to have a passionate and trusting relationship and the self-worth to pursue your desires and express your individuality.

If you find yourself clinging onto past relationships or past hurts it may be time to heal the sacral chakra. When we let go of shame, we gain the confidence we need to meet the world with a strong sense of self and individuality.

Addictive Behaviors

There’s a good chance that if you’ve ever experienced addiction, you probably have a sacral chakra blockage. The sacral chakra represents engaging in joy + pleasure without feeling the need to be constantly satisfied. An excessive need for joy typically represents an overactive Svadhisthana.

Ways to balance the Sacral Chakra

Here are 10 things you can do to balance your sacral chakra:

1 | Create without Fear

Heal your sacral chakra by partaking in a hobby you love such as painting, writing, dancing, sewing, or building without any expectation of how it will turn out. This heals the belief that someone will judge us for what we create and do. Also try engaging in physical creativity through sports such as surfing, running, or any other sport that helps you get in your flow state.

2 | Repeat a Mantra

Mantras can rewire our brains to look at life in a positive light. Try repeating this mantra throughout the day.

I feel fully and have no attachment to what comes up.”

3 | Sit with Your Emotions

Whether you’re in an elated or a depressed space, it’s essential that you learn to sit with these emotions and not act on them.

When you’re feeling negative emotions, meditate and sort through them. See if you can find the root emotion you might be feeling.

When you’re craving pleasure, meditate and consider if it’s coming from a place that aligns with your higher purpose or goal in life. Remember when you sit with your emotions, the goal is to observe, not judge.

Emotions happen, and the more we can learn to not engage and attach so deeply to both positive and negative emotions, the more we can help our sacral chakra healing.

4 | Design Your Life

After understanding where our emotions are coming from, we must figure out what it is we truly desire. Understand that you have the power to make positive change and all you have to do is decide what you are trying to achieve, How do you want to feel?

We hold a lot of emotion in our hips. To heal the sacral chakra, try opening the hips with these yoga poses:

  • Half Pigeon
  • Figure Four
  • Frog pose
  • Gomukasana
  • Skandasana

6 | Eat Orange Foods

For the sacral chakra healing, you’ll want to focus on eating healthy fats, orange foods, fleshy fruits, and anti-inflammatory foods. Omega-3 rich foods are especially beneficial for this chakra.

Some examples of foods include salmon, nuts and seeds, coconut oil, & cinnamon. To promote alignment with the color orange, foods like oranges (duh), sweet potatoes, carrots, kimchi are also great.

7 | Allow Yourself to be Vulnerable

I know this one sounds scary but when you’re willing to give your all to relationships without attachment to their outcome, you’ll be vulnerable and that’s a good thing. If you don’t believe vulnerability is a superpower read Brene Brown’s books. Vulnerability opens you up to real relationships, real intimacy, real love.

8 | Journal

Another powerful tool for sacral chakra healing is journaling. Write a letter or poem to someone (or yourself) expressing your feelings or individuality. You don’t even have to send it, but just getting the emotions out on paper can be very healing. Grab my 30 Day Highest Self Journaling Challenge for Free!

9 | Sing out Loud, Dance, + Be Goofy

Sing loudly in the car or shower to a song that brings out emotions you are feeling. Also try dancing spontaneously or just being overall goofy. The point is to embrace playfulness and creative, joyous living without attachment to what people may think of you.

10 | Get in Water

The element for the sacral chakra is water and this energy hub represents fluidity. Embrace fluidity by going for a swim in a pool, ocean, or lake.
