What Living In An RV As A Teen Taught Me About Confidence & Self-Worth

Most people gain wisdom through hardship.

They go through heartbreak, failure, burnout, and loss — and only then look back and say, “I wish my younger self knew this.”

But for me, life kind of worked backwards.

At 14 years old, my parents did something most people would call crazy.

They sold everything we owned, ditched suburbia, and moved our family of seven into a 30-foot RV to travel full-time.

What was supposed to be a six-month adventure quickly turned into a whole new way of life.

And honestly? It changed everything.

Growing Up on the Road

There were seven of us — two parents, five kids — living in a space smaller than most living rooms.

We chased epic climbs, endless trails, powder days, waves, and bucket-list destinations.

We didn’t just travel.

We lived.

Ten years later, we’re still doing it — building a life around adventure, connection, unschooling, personal growth, and intentionally defying the “normal” path.

But something interesting happened back then.

By the time I was 17, I felt like I had figured out the most important things about life.

Not in an arrogant way — but in a grounded, peaceful, deeply confident way.

I felt fulfilled.

I trusted myself.

I didn’t need approval.

I wasn’t chasing validation.

I just knew who I was.

The only way I can describe it is like a direct channel of understanding — as if wisdom flowed through nature itself.

Maybe it was all the time in the forest.
Maybe it was being removed from constant comparison.
Maybe it was stepping out of the dopamine loop of likes, popularity, and social pressure.

Or maybe it was a combination of everything.

But whatever it was — it worked.

When Life Flipped the Script

Then life changed.

Starting around 2021, I got a crash course in struggle.

Conflict.
Loss.
Fear.
Failure.
Scarcity.
Grief.
Abandonment.

Not the worst anyone has ever experienced — but enough to shake me.

Enough to slowly chip away at my self-belief.

Enough to change what I thought I deserved.

It felt like every time I got back on my feet, something else knocked me down days, weeks, or months later.

And over time, something strange happened.

Chaos started to feel normal.

Struggle started to feel safe.

Growth started to feel scary.

I realized that subconsciously, my nervous system preferred what was familiar — even when what was familiar was hard.

It was easier to stay in the known discomfort than step into the unknown possibility of something better.

And that created a spiral.

One setback led to another.
Another led to another.
And slowly, the confident, grounded version of me faded.

The Question That Changed Everything

Here’s the shift that changed how I look at my life.

I don’t ask: What do I wish my younger self knew before all this?

Instead, I ask: What did I already know at 17 that I need to remember now?

Because the truth is — I had the keys early.

I knew how to trust myself.
I knew how to detach from validation.
I knew how to stay grounded in who I was.
I knew how to live courageously.

Somewhere along the way, I forgot.

Not because I failed.

But because life tested me.

And those tests rewired what felt safe.

Introducing: Raised on the Road

That’s why I created this series — Raised on the Road.

It’s all about the life lessons I learned by 17 that most people aren’t taught until much later (if ever).

Lessons about:

• Confidence
• Self-worth
• Courage
• Authenticity
• Trusting yourself
• Letting go of validation
• Building a life that actually feels fulfilling

And most importantly — how to apply them now, no matter where you are in life.

Because fulfillment isn’t found in perfect circumstances.

It’s found in how you relate to yourself.

I’ll be sharing stories from our travels, the adventures that shaped me, the mistakes I made, and the lessons I’m relearning every day as I rebuild confidence and step back into alignment.

If you’ve ever felt like you used to be more confident…
More fearless…
More sure of yourself…

This series is for you.

Sometimes we don’t need to learn something new.

We just need to remember who we already were.
