Unlike the rugged, rocky peaks typical of Colorado’s mountainous terrain, like Breckenridge, Winter Pak, or Vail, Steamboat’s landscape features quaint mesas and rolling forested hills.
A natural assumption would be that because it lacks the same amount of craggy mountainous peaks, it would have less snow than other Colorado Ski Destinations, but that couldn’t be more false!

Tips On Traveling To Steamboat Ski Resort?
Steamboat Ski Resort is located in Steamboat Springs, in Northern Colorado. Here are some tips on traveling to Aspen Mountain Ski Resort.

- 1: If you wish to RV CAMP in Steamboat in winter there are 2 options. One: Camp at the Steamboat KOA, which is part-time Hook-ups in winter (Electric and Water, no sewer) and has a bus that picks up from the parking lot and drops off at the Gondola Plaza. the second option is to camp at Stagecoach Campground, thirty minutes east of Steamboat Ski Resort, WARNING, Stagecoach, although it may be the most beautiful winter campground below the old Stagecoach ski resort, there are no hook-ups here and it gets cold as it is next to a lake.
- 2: Accommodations (AirBnB’s, VRBO’s, Hotels) are very expensive here, in peak times sometimes more than resorts such as Breckenridge and Park City.
- 3: The Roads to get into Steamboat Springs can be fairly precarious, especially if coming in from the west and going through Craig. Like always advised winter travel precautions.
Best Time To Visit Steamboat Ski Resort
As with all Colorado Ski Resorts, Steamboat Ski Resort is good throughout all winter months. But…if you want to get that classic Champagne Powder, February is typically the snowiest month of the season, with consistent storms bringing fresh powder consistently.
What Is Champagne Powder?
Steamboat Spring’s Champagne Powder is the close competition for “The Best Snow On Earth” only revealed by resorts such as Alta/Snowbird, Brighton, or Vail.
Champagne Powder® is Steamboat Ski Resort’s trademarked term for its light, fluffy, and dry snow that offers an unparalleled skiing experience. It’s so named because the snow’s unique texture and weight mimic the effervescent feel of champagne bubbles. With a water content of only about 6%, Steamboat’s powder is much drier and softer than the denser snow typically found at other ski resorts.
Steamboat’s Champagne Powder® is made possible by a perfect combination of geographical and meteorological factors:
1: Geography: Steamboat is located in northern Colorado, just west of the Continental Divide. Moisture-laden air currents from the Pacific Ocean travel over the Rockies and lose much of their water content at higher altitudes.
2: Storm System and Elevation: By the time storms reach Steamboat, most of the moisture has already been released, resulting in extremely dry, fluffy snow as the remaining moisture condenses.
3: Temperature and Microclimate: Cold temperatures at Steamboat’s elevation preserve the snow in its powdery state, preventing it from becoming dense or icy.
3 Best Things About Steamboat Ski Resort
There are a ton of cool statistical aspects of Steamboat Ski Resort, but here are 3 personal details I really enjoyed about The Boat (As the locals call it).
- 1: Steamboat feels less crowded than other Colorado Ski Resorts.
- 2: There are a ton of different faces and areas of Steamboat for different terrain.
- 3: The Lil Rodeo Half-Pipe is located at the base area so I really enjoyed the fact that at the end of every run you get to ride it.
3 Worse Things about Steamboat Ski Resort
While Steamboat Ski Resort is great, here are the worst things about it.
- Though the snow is amazing here, I get rather disappointed that Steamboat lacks challenging terrain as resorts such as Snowbird, Jackson, or Palisades offer, so you cannot do as much with the amazing snow when it comes.
- Monotnous feel. Even though there is a ton of acres and areas here ate Steamboat, after a long day, or multiple days, they all start to blur together with lack-of-luster.
- The Champagne Powder here is amazingly fluffy, but I found that it is very hard to play with the snow because of how light it is, unlike snow at places such as Alta and Brighton where the snow can cushion your fall and you can bounce off of.
Steamboat Ski Resort For Beginners
Steamboat Ski Resort is a phenomenal beginner ski resort. The blues here are very gradual and most beginner skiers will find them durable.
If you are an absolute beginner then you will want to stay at the Base Area at Steamboat Ski Resort, lapping lifts such as Christie Peak and Thunderhead where the majority of the green trails are found.
If you are feeling strong and able, and are getting bored of these lifts, then go up to the very top of Sunshine Peak and ride the Sundown Area with its very gradual slopes. (The best part is that after you ski the Sundown Area, you can ride up South Peak Lift, ride down the green Broadway run, then ride up Elkhead Lift and take the Steamboat Gondola down)
Steamboat Ski Resort For Intermediates
Steamboat Springs may be the best ski resort in all of Colorado if you are an intermediate skier.
If you are an intermediate skier almost the entire mountain, all 3,000 acres, are open to you. Some of the best places for Intermediate terrain are the Sunshine Area with its wide groomers, The Sundown Area with its intermediate glades, and the Storm Peak area with Buddy’s Run, the longest continuous blue run on the mountain.
Steamboat Ski Resort For Advanced
If you are an advanced skier you will find Steamboat Ski Resort a blast to explore, specifically if you are an advanced glade skier who enjoys all the trees and moguls they can find.
The glade terrain at Steamboat Ski Resort is in my opinion the BEST GLADE TERRAIN IN AMERICA. It is unparalleled by any other resort with its powder stashes and tight areas perfect if you are a skier who wants to find the thinnest and most technical trees.
Admittedly if you are an advanced skier who wants cliffs to jump off of, jumps to huck, and chutes to blow down, you will have trouble finding that at Steamboat Ski Resort. The closest you can get terrain such as that is over at Mahogany Ridge.
The problem is that to access this Freeride terrain requires a boot-pack back up to the lift, and the lifts located here (pony Express and Mahogony Ridge) are on the far left side of the mountain and if conditions are not good it can take a long time to escape from there.
Also if you are an advanced terrain-park skier you will be pleased to know there are 2 Terrain Parks here, one Half-Pipe, a Big-Air Jump, and a Superpipe.
Base Area
The base area at Steamboat Ski Resort, known as Steamboat Square, is a lovely place to hang out after a long day of skiing, with many restaurants of various choices present, like the Truffle Pig nearly slopeside, and our favorite, Storm Peak Brewery, just a little down the road.
The Steamboat Square will also frequently host musicians and concerts.
Vertical Drop
The Vertical Drop at Steamboat Ski Resort is wonderful and lovely. There is a great diversity of runs here to access all of it and most of the runs can access the majority of the drop.
I must say though that it is impossible to do a top-down run at Steamboat and the longest possible run is Calf-Roper to Rainbow to Why Not.
Summit
Steamboat Ski Resort is made up of 4 mountains and 3 summits.
The Sunshine Summit is the busiest and most popular summit, known for its powder stashes giving access to the Sunshine and Sundown lifts and areas.
The Storm Peak Summit is the summit to the left of Sunshine (If looking from a map), here you will be able to access the hardest alpine bowls and glades like Storm Peak North and South, as well as drop in on the backside lift of Steamboat, Morningside, a 3 person chairlift, which holds the most abundance of snow and gives access to the hardest glades on the mountain, The Ridge and The Chutes.
The third summit at Steamboat Ski Resort is Mt Werner, this summit requires a minor boot-pack to achieve, is located near the Morningside Lift, and from its peak gives access to the hardest terrain on the mountain The Gully and Christmas Tree Bowl
Off-Trail/Glades
The glades at Steamboat Ski Resort are, in my opinion, THE BEST GLADES IN NORTH AMERICA.
These glades feature perfectly spaced aspen and evergreen trees, creating an unparalleled experience for skiers and snowboarders, no matter your skill level.
There’s something for everyone here, from the more accessible Sunshine and Priest Creek Glades to the thrilling challenges of Christmas Tree Bowl and Shadows.
Grooming
The grooming at Steamboat Ski Resort is almost equally as good as the Champagne Powder that falls here.
While Steamboat Ski Resort’s grooming does not compete with resorts such as Snowmass, Deer Valley, or Beaver Creek, There is definitely an option for them nevertheless.
Some of the best runs for top-notch grooming are Heavenly Dazed and Buddy’s Run.
Terrain Parks
With a Full-Competition-Sized Superpipe Steamboat Ski Resort technically has a great Terrain Park System.
So if you like Half-Pipe riding you will be happy to know that Steamboat has two of them, but at the same time Steamboat lacks intermediate jumps, a good learning area, and the Terrain-Parks are placed in odd locations to access.
Lifts
The 18 lifts at Steamboat Ski Resort offer a huge diversity of skiing.
The Steamboat Gondola is a perfect lift for your warm-up rides and connects to the Thunderhead Express which is one of the most fun and least skied areas of the mountain.
The Sunshine and Sundown lift are great lifts for off-trail and glades, alongside Storm Peak Express, Elkhead Express, and Burgess Creek.
And even if you desire a lift for lapping the Terrain-Parks (Bashor and Christie Peak) or lapping intense freeride terrain (Morningside, Pony Express, or Mahongy Ridge) Steamboat has got you covered.
Lodging
The lodging is great at Steamboat Ski Resort, but it can be a bit more pricey than either Colorado Ski Destination.
As I said before, if you wish to Car-Camp/RV-Camp in Steamboat in winter you have two options, Stagecoach Campground, or the Steamboat Koa.
If you want your trip to be the most exquisite, I would highly recommend staying at The Steamboat Grand or the Sheraton Steamboat Resort.
Parking
Parking at Steamboat Ski Resort is convenient, with several options depending on your preferences and proximity to the slopes.
- The primary choice for free parking is the Meadows Parking Lot, located a short shuttle ride away from the base area. Shuttles run frequently, ensuring you can easily get to and from the resort without hassle.
- If you prefer parking closer to the slopes, the Gondola Square Parking Garage offers paid parking within walking distance of the base, making it an ideal choice for convenience. However, spots can fill up quickly, especially on weekends.
- For those arriving early, limited free parking is also available along Knoll Parking Lot near Ski Time Square. Check Steamboat’s website or signage for real-time parking updates to ensure a stress-free start to your day on the mountain.
Bus System
The Steamboat Springs Transit (SST) system is your ticket to effortless skiing adventures!
This free and efficient bus service connects key locations throughout town with Steamboat Ski Resort, making it a breeze to hit the slopes.
Whether you’re staying in downtown Steamboat or at one of the many lodging options, the SST buses run frequently, dropping you right at the resort base. No need to worry about parking—just hop on, gear up, and enjoy the ride to world-class powder and pristine trails!
Crowds
We recently skied at Steamboat Ski Resort on a weekend and let me tell you the crowds are like all Colorado Ski Resort Crowds.
Though Early Mid-Week, before school gets out, you will find almost entire runs to yourself.
Also, Steamboat Ski Resort’s lift systems do a good job of spreading out the crowds.

Best Runs at Steamboat Ski Resort
- Heavenly Dazed – Located right below the Steamboat Gondola, this is the best run for fast corduroy.
- Kuus’ Cruise – A Super fun glade runs parallel to Shadows and Sundown Lift Line.
- Christmas Tree Bowl – If you want the toughest terrain on the mountain, come here.
